A car, an icon, and the cue
Times of India displayed this picture of Amitabh Bachchan receiving a Rolls Royce Phantom as a gift from filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra for his “stunning” performance in Eklavya.
What ran through my mind…
The simple explanations
- VVC’s very private gesture of appreciation to a giant and an overenthusiastic playing up by the editorial blokes at TOI.
- There was a big newshole, which had to be covered.
The cynical explanations
- A good publicity stunt… VVC probably understands the internal economic structure of cultural commodities thereby providing a spectacle hungry media three interlinked motifs in the snapshot — an expensive car, the image of a patriarchal icon, and the cue to an impending film — all of which are only understood for their exchange value by the consumer. There is no merit in the picture. There is little by way of use or understanding if the three exchange values are removed.
- The newshole argument does not hold much water what when you have so much content flying around.
